Mother Tongue & Language Discovery

Mother tongue is the first language children learn. It’s central to their development process, because it’s what binds them to their family, to a culture, to a community.

Young children can learn several languages at once, but for their language skills to be built on a solid foundation, they need to have a mother tongue that they are proud of and have mastered.

Our approach to teaching Thai and English is based on an action-oriented, communicative pedagogy. The themes studied are linked to class projects.

Petite Section de Maternelle

Learning is essentially based on the French language. For Thai-speaking children, Thai language support is available. For all children, an hour of Thai language discovery called “language bath” is offered every week.

From Moyenne Section de Maternelle onwards, LFIB offers language courses (French, Thai, English).
In September, the children are assessed and their language skills are evaluated. Individualized, customized language courses are then set up to meet the needs of each individual.
Throughout the school year, adjustments are made as the child’s language skills evolve. This decision is made by the class teacher and the cycle council.
For Thai-speaking pupils, reinforcing their mother tongue will be a guarantee of success before starting to learn a third foreign language from CP onwards.

From Moyenne Section de Maternelle onwards, LFIB offers language courses (French, Thai, English).
The language taught in Moyenne Section is retained in Grande Section. A change of group remains possible only from the reinforced French to the language courses.
Grande Section students whose French language skills need reinforcement are taken care of in a French as a Second Language (Flsco) group.

All students discover a third language during the weekly “language bath”:
students learning Thai take part in the English language bath, and students learning English benefit from the Thai language bath.

Grande Section students whose French language skills need reinforcement are taken care of in a French as a second language (Flsco) group.
